How do you become a better game artist?
One way is to model and texture simple, every day objects that anyone can relate to. That's what Brett Briley's students do.
The very first assignment is to create a model sheet of common objects. Then Brett picks one that you bring to life.
You can do that today by picking a simple object around you. Once you do, remember to start with a high resolution model NOT the low rez. Your first goal should be to create the ideal version of it.
After all, in game resolution can vary dramatically and you may even be called on to lower it weeks after you thought you were done.
Below is an example by Armando Durruthy. Skip further down to see Armando's progress with #4.
